Life-size carved limestone head, portraying the mythological character Silenus, son of Pan. Popular as a teacher of music, especially to Dionysus, he is herewith depicted with a full curly beard, bald crown and full wavy hair in back. Expressive facial expression, having a heavily furrowed forehead wrinkled face and open mouth, probably singing. This is a theatrical portrait of Silenus, one of the Dionysian troupe of mythological characters. Silenus was the oldest and wisest of the troupe
