Southeast Asia, Borneo, Dayak peoples. A pair of small guardian figures carved from deer horn, one seated with hands raised to the face and the other a standing figure with a large head, both with tribal hornbill-style hands. A strand of human hair is attached.
Hampatong are protective figures made by Dayak peoples, notably the Ngaju of Kalimantan. They range from monumental posts outside houses and villages to small amulets like these, which were carried to ward off sickness and harmful spirits. The hornbill is a sacred bird associated with the upper world. Field collected, Borneo, 1998.
