Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Maluku, 19th century. A small deer-horn figure of a squatting ancestor with a large head, a ridged headdress and hands raised to the chin. The surface has an aged, honey-coloured polish.

Squatting ancestor figures with hands at the chin are found widely in the eastern Indonesian islands; the pose is often interpreted as one of mourning, reflection or respect. Field collected, Maluku, 2008.
