Southeast Asia, Borneo, Dayak peoples, mid-20th century. A tall cylindrical bone carving of stacked figures and faces: a crowned head at the top above a staring face, an openwork band of interlaced scrolls, and further figures towards the base.
Dayak carvers worked bone and antler into amulets, sword-hilts and charms decorated with ancestor faces and the curling aso (dragon-dog) motif, believed to give protection against harmful spirits. Field collected, Indonesia, 2008.
