Southeast Asia, Borneo, Kayan people, 19th century. A human trophy skull, the cranium richly incised with scrolling, interlocking spiral motifs in the Kayan style and inset with a disc on the forehead. The surface has a deep, smoke-darkened brown patina.
Among many Dayak peoples, headhunting was bound up with fertility, status and the spiritual welfare of the community. Taken heads were brought home, ritually welcomed, and kept in the longhouse, where they were believed to bring blessings and protection. Carving the skull is particularly associated with the Kayan and Kenyah. According to its earlier description, the skull is that of a woman aged 17 to 26. Source: David Howard, San Francisco.
