West Africa, Mali, inland Niger Delta, Djenné style. A cast bronze figure of a kneeling woman with hands crossed over her chest, an elaborate crested hairstyle, a prominent profile and a smooth, warm brown patina.

Kneeling figures in clay and bronze are characteristic of the Djenné culture of the inland Niger Delta (ca. 11th–17th century CE). The pose is generally read as one of devotion or supplication. Many recent bronzes in this style were cast for the market.
