Bronze Sculpture of Dancing Girl

- Country: Cameroon

West Africa, Cameroon, late 20th century. A cast bronze sculpture of a dancing figure with a spiked crown, a large face with bulging eyes and full lips, and a body covered in raised spiral and dotted ornament. The figure stands with bent knees and outstretched arms, mid-movement.
Lost-wax brass casting has a long tradition in the Cameroon Grassfields, especially at Foumban, the Bamum capital, where workshops still produce figures, masks and pipes for both local use and the wider market.
