West Africa, Cameroon, 20th century. A cast bronze figure made by the lost-wax method, with a large expressive head, prominent eyes and ears, and a richly textured body. The surface shows the fine wax-thread detail typical of Grassfields casting.

Brass casting is an old prestige craft in the Cameroon Grassfields, centred on the Bamum capital Foumban, where workshops still make figures, pipes and masks for local patrons and the wider market. Field collected, Cameroon, 2004.
