North America, Canadian Arctic, Inuit, 1993. A carved serpentine stone figure by Samuel Nashaoriatook of a smiling man in a hooded parka with both arms raised, one hand holding a small pail carved from caribou antler. The figure is compact and solid, with simple, expressive features.
Inuit stone carving developed as a commercial art from the late 1940s, encouraged by the artist James Houston and the Canadian government, and quickly became one of the best-known art forms of the North. Scenes of everyday life, such as hunting, fishing and carrying water, are favourite subjects. Source: Marion Scott Gallery, Vancouver.
