- Size (cm): 22
- Material: Stucco
Southeast Asia, Indonesia, East Java, Majapahit Empire, ca. 1293 to 1527 CE. A finely preserved stucco figure of a rotund woman squatting atop an integral plinth, her corpulent belly hanging between parted legs in a birthing pose. She wears heavy ear ornaments and a necklace, and her round face is calm and smiling.
Majapahit artwork focused chiefly on gods, goddesses and royalty, and this figure may represent a royal wife adorned with the ornaments of her rank, or a fertility image invoking safe childbirth. The pitted, chalky surface is typical of Javanese stucco and terracotta of this period.
