Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Quimbaya culture, ca. 1000 to 1250 CE. Two flat slab-shaped terracotta figures (tunjos in the ‘slab’ style) of a seated couple with rectangular heads, pierced crowns and incised features.

The Quimbaya lived in the middle Cauca valley (today’s Quindío, Caldas and Risaralda). Seated figures like these were placed in tombs as grave guardians and helpers in the afterlife. Ex private German collection.
