Southern Africa, Zimbabwe, Shona sculpture by Washington Msonza. A sculpture of a sleeping man carved from black serpentine (springstone), curled up with his head resting on his arms. The stone is highly polished to a soft, reflective sheen.
The Shona sculpture movement dates from the mid-1950s and combines traditional Shona forms with modern Western art. It grew out of the workshop around Frank McEwen at the National Gallery in Salisbury (Harare) and the Tengenenge community, and became internationally known in the 1960s and 70s.
