East Africa, Kenya, 20th century. A tall, extremely slender carved wooden figure of a standing person with a small head, wire-thin limbs and elongated legs on a square base. The motif is a standard tourist design, but this example is carved with more skill and a better sense of proportion than most.

Elongated figures of this type became popular in East African workshops from the mid-20th century, inspired in part by Makonde carving and by the modernist taste of foreign buyers. Field collected, Lamu, Kenya.
