Three Indus Valley Idols

- Country: Pakistan
- Source: Private New York Collection
- Size (cm): 10
- Material: Terracotta
Ancient Near East / South Asia, Baluchistan, ca. 3000 BCE. Three hand-modelled terracotta female idols with flat, flaring bodies, pinched faces, applied breasts and pierced ornaments or eyes. Two have rounded hips and short outstretched arms, and the third is narrower and more columnar.
Small female figurines are among the most common finds at early farming villages of Baluchistan and the Indus borderlands, such as Mehrgarh, Nausharo and the Zhob valley sites. They are generally interpreted as fertility or household cult figures, perhaps placed in domestic shrines. Private New York collection.
