Carolyn was born at Lake Merritt Hospital in Oakland. It was a hard birth, ending in a Caesarean section after a long labor. At the time fathers were not allowed in the delivery room or the newborn nursery. Looking through the nursery window in the early hours, I knew my job in life was to take good care of this baby.
