I came to Berkeley in 1972 after a year in Oregon. Patty and I were living together. I completed a second senior year, writing my honors thesis, “Newton’s Sleep.” I stayed at Berkeley through my master’s and PhD, then held teaching and research positions there until moving to Washington in 1980.
Patty and I moved back from Oregon to the Bay Area in 1972. We first lived with Sue Melrose in East Palo Alto, then moved to Menlo Park. We rode Patty’s tandem bike.
In 1971 I began reading the Frankfurt School (especially Herbert Marcuse) and Norman O. Brown. Marcuse and Brown shaped my thinking for almost a decade.
Patty and I moved to Eugene for a summer with my Santa Barbara roommate Russ and Cindy.
Before we were married Patty and I took a trip down the west coast of Mexico by train and bus. We visited Mazatlán, Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta, Tepic and San Blas.

In 1970 Lyndon and I jointly bought a Fiat 850 Spider with the financial help of his father. Within the next two years everything on the car broke except the steering wheel.
I attended UC Santa Barbara for my junior and senior years of college. At first I roomed with Lyndon Bittle and Gary Bombach. Senior year roomed with Russ Teale, Wes and David Sveck. During the summer of 1970 I worked in Santa Monica as the “new father” to a young man with schizophrenia.
In high school and during my first two years of college, I wrote poetry. The style was somewhere between e. e. cummings and Allen Ginsberg.
From 1967 through the early 70’s I was influenced by the counterculture movement. I briefly lived in a commune in Santa Barbara (Boranco Nation), smoked dope and took psychedelic drugs. Patty and I moved with a group of friends to Eugene, Oregon. I wore hippie style clothes.
