When Carolyn was two, Patty and I took our second trip to Europe. In Paris we leased a Simca and in London a small Ford. We spent substantial time in Spain. Around 1976 I began to have kidney stones. Each one meant an overnight stay in the emergency room. For the next few years I had one or two a year. By 1984 they became less frequent. My last large one was in Japan in 2006.
Around 1974 Patty and I bought a 1972 Mazda RX2 from a couple in Pacifica. The car kept blowing out its electronic control boxes.
We lived in married-student housing while I was at UC Berkeley. (This building, and address, no longer exist.)
Carolyn was born at Lake Merritt Hospital in Oakland. It was a hard birth, ending in a Caesarean section after a long labor. In 1973 Patty and I bought a 1965 Chevy Impala with a big 396 engine from an older man in Oakland.
Patty and I moved with Moe and Cindy to Oakland. (Cindy later went to Europe and did not come back to Moe, who then met Becky.)
When Patty and I moved to Berkeley we became involved with the Disability Rights Movement. Patty first made use of the services of the Physically Disabled Students’ Program (PDSP) and later became a counselor for blind students. We hung out with many of the disabled gang. In June 1973 I was awarded a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with honors in Sociology and Speech. My senior thesis was titled “Newton’s Sleep.”
